A collaborative project conceived and led by sound designer Steven Brown with the Students and Staff of Central School of Speech and Drama, London.
Project Overview
Many people associate sound and sound design with the use of technology. The aim of this installation was to show that the creation of sound is possible, valid and just as much fun when using mechanical structures and non powered machines.
Inspired by research into the machines which were used for the creation of theatre sound effects in years gone by, we were able to produce an interesting, exciting and creative ‘living’ exhibition for visitors to Výstaviště and the Prague Quadrennial 2007 to enjoy.
This installation encouraged and enabled a number of ‘impromptu’ performances during PQ as visitors explored the possibilities of using and performing with these sound making machines. Four interactive exhibits were installed on the tarmac approach to the Výstaviště and visitors to PQ were encouraged to use, create and explore the sounds that these machines produced.
